LESSON 7: COLLABORATION BY DIGITAL CHANNELS

To start with, the main objectives of this lesson were: to be aware of the channels to connect with others and to collaborate by digital tools with the end of the interaction, to be able to use the technology and tools to work in a team, to create collaborative projects, and to create and to build common resources, knowledge, and contents, to know and to use collaborative tools such as forums and wikis, to take part in sharing public spaces and to control and to share teaching contents by software collaborative tools.

Digital collaboration refers to the use of digital tools with the aim of collaborating. The current digital tools and the Internet let a high number of people communicate in between them and share contents and work in the same way to get a shared goal. Also, the concept “online collaboration” is directly related to “digital collaboration”, whose meaning is similar, but the field of application that is only and exclusively the Internet. In terms of tools for digital collaboration, although they all need an Internet connection some are based on software that we install on our computer or laptop and as apps on our mobile or tablet. Others directly are a cloud service and we can from web browser to use them, sometimes we are asked to install some small package or plug-in to our browser.  Most of the collaborative applications let to choose the type of access control and the role of the participants. It deals with software that creates digital media to share ideas, documents, images, etc. The chosen software depends on the type of collaborative project.

For this lesson we had to do two activities, one about participating in a forum, which is an online discussion site where people can hold conversations in the form of posted messages and another about modifying a wiki, which is a website where users collaboratively modify content and information about a certain topic directly from the web browser.

In the first activity we needed to answer the following question: “What do you think about parents sharing pictures of their young children on their social networks?” in a forum created in the Aula Virtual for all the class. My response was:

In my opinion, I am not against publishing kids on social networks as long as it is done in a conscientious way and taking into account many facts. First of all, parents should have in mind that what their kids do is something very personal and intimate. They should know that when use and post things on social media, you are sharing and providing others a lot of information that is going to stay on the net forever. Also, having your parents posting about you since you are little may encourage the child to use digital advises earlier. So I think posting thinks of your kids is okay as long as you make a good use of networks for this type of publications.

The objective of this activity was to get to know what the opinion of all the students was on this subject and to be able to understand their position in addition to being able to compare it with yours. It also helps us raise awareness and clarify our ideas on this issue and to hold conversations with our classmates.

In the second activity we had to enter in wiki ICT in Aula virtual and each member of the group had to write about some facets of our theme (Peace Day). In my case, as we can see in the screenshot below, I talked about why celebrating the Peace Day is so important.

The objective of this activity was to learn how to use and edit a wiki directly from the web browser and by achieving it not only did we learn how to add information to our wiki (like the information that appears in the image below), but also learnt more about the topic we chose and made other classmates learn as well when visiting our wiki.
