LESSON 4: DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES INTERACTION

In this lesson we had to create a virtual learning community in a social network to talk to other teachers and professionals about the topic we had chosen. My group decided to create a community on Facebook about the peace day. Facebook is an online social networking website where people can create profiles, share information and answer to the information posted by others. We chose Facebook over other social networks because there is no limit of characters and because we can provide information for anyone that wants to know more about the peace day and other teachers can give us feedback regarding our didactic unit and suggest some new approaches.

The main objectives of this activity were: to know those key competences to the student that let it to interact by a number of digital devices and applications, to understand how the digital communication is distributed, represented and managed, to understand the appropriate use of different communication ways through digital media, to study different communication formats, adapting strategies and communication ways to specific target group and to know the basic aspects regarding cybersecurity as net individual and as teachers to transmit this knowledge and to detect possible risky situations.

The two screenshots I uploaded below show the web site of education we created and the group we linked to it. We can see the front page of the virtual community and the page with some of the content we had uploaded. To do this, we entered Facebook, chose the option to create a group, customized our profile picture and main information and asked all the members of the group to join it. We named our community Peace Day as we wanted to choose a simple name for individuals to find our community in a fast and easy way.

With this activity I realized how useful virtual learning communities are. Using platforms like Facebook, makes learning and teaching easier as you have a place where you can know more about a specific topic but also, you can write and help other people with any concerns and questions. Virtual learning communities allow individuals to feel connected to each other while also being able to look for information whenever they feel like it. Individuals can also ask for feedback about their content or teaching strategies and update their strategies.
