LESSON 1: NAVIGATION AND SEARCH
During this first lesson, we learnt about the Internet and the Web. The Internet is the network of machinery that provide access to several communication services while the Web is a collection of pages with different kind of content. We also learnt that a page is a document or electronic information capable of containing text, sound, video, programs, images and links to other resources that can be accessed through a web browser.
We understood the difference between web browsers and search engines and how to settle the privacy on these. A browser is your access to the Internet, and a search engine allows you to search the internet once you have access. You have to use a browser to get to a search engine. Examples of web browsers are Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Internet Explorer and Opera. We learnt different tips for looking on search engines. The search is easier by using OR, AND *, - or +.
In addition, we talked about fake news and how to recognise when something is fake or not. Some ways to check if the information is true is to check for previous work, go upstream to the source, read laterally and circle back. They also suggest being suspicious and follow your instincts, don't just keep the headline, check the content, look at the date, the amount of media they have published and if there is any misspelling.
Moreover, we understood that libraries also offer websites where they publish information such as references of physical books and e-books which are a source of high-quality information. There is also an option to bookmark specific webpages or articles, so they are easier and faster to access. You may bookmark webpages in the different web browsers or search engines however, there are online platforms such as Diigo where you can bookmark URLs and share them with other individuals.
The main objectives of this lesson were learning how to search for digital information on the network and to know how to access it, finding which of the information found is relevant to teaching assignments, selecting educational resources effectively, manage different sources of information and finally to create personal information strategies.
Going back to the topic of bookmarking webpages, the TASK of this lesson was to create a Diigo account. The link of mine is: https://www.diigo.com/user/aliciazurdo
With this activity we also learnt how to search information about our topic chosen. In my case, I searched for "peace AND education", using one of the strategies we learnt in class, as the topic of my group is Peace Day and I wanted to search for articles where education was included. We finally had to add the links we found interesting in the library of our Diigo account and add tags to them.
